Guides

During the past twenty years, we have traveled with hundreds of guides as we bicycled, scuba dived, fished, hiked, and enjoyed a variety of other adventures around the globe. We have had many great guides, ones that we truly appreciated, yet the following, based on their knowledge of the country, culture, and environment, are those that Mary Peachin considers to be the very best of the best.

Patrick Beille

Many guides are capable of reading structure, riffles, holes, but Patrick Bielle (plaind@gmail.com)  goes which fish hang out at which depths in which locations. He also knows which species prefer certain depths, mouths of incoming flowing streams, and when the fishing will turn on (and off.)  He is great with the net and careful about the release. If you want a great guide, it's a journey you'll never forget in the Yukon wilderness at Tincup Lodge.

Lars Akerberg

There are good fishing captains, then there are great ones. I'd put Captain Lars in this category. He can read the tides, currents, and he knows where the fish are located. Even better, he knows when they should be biting. Kind, helpful, he is there to guide and assist you. At the same time, he allows you to fish to your capabilities.

Ken Richardson

Ken Richardson's knowledge of Yukon Territory's fish, their favorite flies, and the best fishing techniques to use make this Inconnu Lodge guide one of the very best. www.inconnulodge.com

Captain Dave Kostyo

Captain Dave Kostyo operates fishing charters for sailfish, kingfish, tarpon and dolphin on his 28-foot “Knot Nancy." Try a Miami double-header by fishing the Gulfstream for sailfish then drifting beach surfs for tarpon. If the fish are biting, Captain Dave will put you on them.

Greg Stathakis

Greg is familiar with every aspect of PNG culture. He can identify the many species of Birds of Paradise as well as the flowers, plants, and insects. Greg has a working knowledge of pidgin and great working relationships in a country  difficult to navigate. He is meticulous in his planning and safety is always foremost in his mind.

Buck Leonard

Buck Leonard is not your average guide. With more than 20 years of experience fishing on the Snake, he knows every riffle in the river, its ledges, boulders, foam drifts, banks, and eddies. He continually changed flies to determine which one will attract the fish. He doesn’t use typical fly shop flies, but nameless, anonymous ones that he ties, those that appealed to the rivers’ “grand slam" release of rainbow, brown, and cutthroat trout, and even whitefish. Buck's expertise goes beyond his fishing knowledge. He knows the archeology of the region plus its wildlife (moose, deer, bear), the trees flora and fauna, a “yes, he is a rowing encyclopedia."

Mark McAneeley

Anglers book Mark McAneeley years in advance to guide them salmon fishing at Langara in the Queen Charlottes or steelheading on the Babine at the Silver Hilton Lodge. This master angler oozes enthusiasm to match his talent.
