Camping Safety

It's nice to escape from the business of life and relax a bit surrounded by nature. Camping has increased in popularity throughout the years as people look for ways to reconnect with the world around them. Exploring the beauty of nature can be thrilling, but there are safety factors to keep in mind when camping.

Know where you are going. Make yourself familiar with the area in which you are camping. Even if it's a well populated camping ground, make sure you have an accurate map of various trails and places on the campground property. This becomes most important if you are camping in an unsecured area. Learn how to use and carry a compass.

Take a first aid class and carry supplies for basic first aid. While you hope that no accidents will punctuate your camping experience it is best to be prepared for anything that may happen. Know where to go for help should you have the need and don't skimp on the travel insurance.

Pack food so that it is not a lure for wild animals. Keep items in plastic bags that can be re-closed. Animal proof containers should be purchased and used to store food items. Never take food into a tent and try to keep the area free of food debris. If it is possible, place food in your locked vehicle during the night.

Respect the experience of being in an untamed atmosphere. It is likely you will come across various animals if you camp for any length of time. Remember that animals can be fiercely protective over their spaces and their young. It's best to stay away from the animals even if you think them cute and friendly. Animals can be unpredictable and most of them are faster than you.

Carry and use insect repellent to guard against ticks, fleas, mosquitoes, and other insects. Keeping your tend closed when you aren't inside of it can help to keep it insect free. Remember that insects are often attracted to light. Keep that in mind when setting out your lanterns.

If you are going to explore the area make sure you take a buddy with you. No one should go exploring on their own. Have a call or signal that each member of your party knows means that help is needed. Keep an eye on smaller children who may tend to wander off when people are distracted. Teach them to remain in one place should they get lost and wait for help.

Following these and other safety procedures while camping will help ensure you a pleasant and safe experience.
